Biotechnology Day at American University of Ras Al Khaimah - AURAK

The Biotechnology Department and the Office of Admissions of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah organized a Biotechnology Day on 14th May 2011. The event was an opportunity for the High School Students in the United Arab Emirates to get to know more about the emerging fields of life sciences.

The idea of the event stem from the need to make people aware of the career possibilities in the area of Biotechnology, and focused towards those high school students who are interested to pursue a career in life-sciences related fields. For these students, Biotechnology offers a perfect degree program as it opens doors to its applications in Environmental, Agricultural, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Medical, Genetics and many more fields.

'Biotechnology Day is a student run initiative to spread awareness about the emerging field of Biotechnology, backed by the support of the Administration of the university" said Afiq Hasan from the Admissions Department.

Large number of students, representing a good mix of cultural backgrounds coming from almost all the Emirates participated in this event

The event was started by Dr Shaukat Mirza, President of AURAK, who underlined the significance of these events in informing and raising public awareness in general and in offering sound information to direct the students at critical time of their career development.

The audience was then introduced to the different fields of Biotechnology by Professor Saad Alsaadi, Chairperson of Biotechnology at AURAK, who highlighted the historical and the present developments in the field of Biotechnology. The practical application of Biotechnology in dealing with many economically important issues like agricultural development in UAE, were also discussed.

"The Future Prospects of Biotechnology" was thoroughly highlighted by Dr Talal Al Zaher, Biotechnology Manager at Julphar Pharmaceutical Industries, who also emphasized the importance of establishing a strong links and cooperation between the university and the industrial sections in general, and the companies working in the fields of biotechnology in particular.

The second part of the event was entirely student facilitated which included an open- discussion between the Biotechnology students of AURAK and the delegates. In addition the delegates were taken in a tour to observe various projects that AURAK-Biotechnology students have been working on, followed by a visit to the Biotechnology laboratory where the delegates experienced some of the practical side of biotechnology first hand.

We thank all those who attended and made this event a success.

Shaikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, attended the Global Day celebration organized by the Cultural Club of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK) at the University Campus on Thursday the 14th of April 2011. The event, organized around the theme ‘Unity and Diversity’, was a celebration of the multicultural identity of the AURAK campus which has students from as many as 29 countries.

	Go straight until you come to Clock Tower – (R/A – 2) about 1Km.

AURAK Open Day Deemed Huge Success

Over one hundred students came through the doors of The American University of Ras Al Khaimah on Saturday April 10 when the university staged an Open Day featuring a free of charge fall application. "We're extremely pleased with the high level of interest by secondary school students and their parents" stated university president, Professor Sharon Siverts. "Families see that AURAK provides robust accredited higher education in addition to being an excellent value. The extraordinary number of applications demonstrates the need for university studies in this Northern Emirate."

In addition to completing an application for fall admission, students and families were taken on escorted tours of the campus by student ambassadors. Highlighting the tour were visits to the various labs where professors engaged secondary school students in hands-on experiments. Another popular stop was the gym where visitors participated in a basketball free throw competition. The new Student Center was a popular stop for everyone and had parents commenting on the design and luxury of the building. It will feature wireless Internet throughout and offer students a number of services such as fast food, a book store, a copy shop and a mini-mart. Visitors also had a look at the new student residence halls that offer four star luxury type facilities with full balconies, kitchenettes and tiled bathrooms.

University professors, representing various disciplines, were popular figures meeting with visiting students and families regarding study options for a four-year Bachelor of Science degree available at AURAK. Students also queried professors about career opportunities available in the region after graduation. With internships a part of each degree program, the graduating student will be poised for an exciting career.

AURAK offers the English language learner extensive education in both academic English and English for the job-seeker. Students requiring English language classes or IELTS preparation registered for early summer programs and families were able to meet with representatives from accounts and then discuss the option of a Student Loan with a representative of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. A community minded university, AURAK representatives were also on hand to meet with municipal and other government officials.

AURAK celebrates Accreditation of Four Degree Programs!

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah, announced that the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has awarded accreditation for its Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering, Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering, Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and its Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology. “The university is delighted that these four programs have met the Commission for Academic Accreditation requirements,” stated university president, Dr. Sharon Siverts. Licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education, the university was founded by the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi. In addition to the two engineering programs, the university offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology and Business Administration (specializations in Finance, International Business and Marketing). Two new programs have been proposed for Fall 2010: Bachelor of Science in Management with specializations in Management Information Systems and Human Resource Management and an Master’s of Education in Educational Leadership and are awaiting accreditation review. Degrees are awarded after achieving four years of American-style higher education and meeting stated requirements. Keen to expand, additional degrees for 2011 are under consideration along with a plan for new academic space.

AURAK offers an array of scholarships including Chancellor Scholarships, available to the high achieving students. Other scholarships include those awarded for merit, program scholarships and the Ras Al Khaimah resident assistance plan.
Located just an hour north of Dubai, the American University of Ras Al Khaimah is situated on a spacious green campus. AURAK offers students a full university experience with an abundance of student activities and sports. Sports facilities include a gym, soccer field and soon, a six lane running track. Students recently moved into new on-campus residential halls with each room featuring a kitchenette, tiled bathroom, under-bed storage and balconies. American University of Ras Al Khaimah Hosts First Open Evening, August 8

The American University of Ras Al Khaimah hosted an on-campus Information session for prospective students and their families from all over the UAE last Saturday, August 8.
AURAK’s Student Ambassadors guided students and families on campus tours, showing off the well-equipped science and engineering laboratories, newly re-furbished contemporary classrooms, the library, and sport facilities. Audio-visual displays and campus tours introduced prospective students to AURAK’s major campus development, supplementing existing facilities with two new, apartment-style student residence halls, and a state of the art Student Center will be the focal-point of student life with shops, food service, student clubs, recreation spaces, and student support services.

Offering exceptional value, tuition at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah is among the most reasonable in the UAE for a high-quality education based on the American model. Prospective students were impressed with the availability of scholarships, tuition reductions for well-qualified students, and the flexible payment plans.

Faculty members provided one-on-one information sessions to prospective students on the various programs on offer. Current undergraduate programs at AURAK include Business Administration with a focus on marketing, management, finance or international business; Electronics and Communications Engineering with a focus on IT; and Biology with a focus on biotechnology or bioinformatics. Opening of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah

His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, announced the opening on June 1, 2009 of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK), established by Royal Decree. The new university originates from the vision of His Highness Sheikh Saud, who wanted to found a university that would serve the needs of Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, and the region.

He wishes to provide high quality educational opportunities to students that both foster a global outlook and are rooted in the region's context and culture.

H.H Sheikh Saud offered remarks about the new university. He emphasized that AURAK, as it will be known, will be vigilant in serving the needs of the community, both professionals wishing to further their education and students leaving secondary school.

The new university is to be a hallmark of excellence for the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, the nation, and the region. After introducing Professor Sharon Siverts as the University's new president, Sheikh Saud praised the faculty and staff of GMU-RAK who will remain and encouraged them in their efforts to build the new university. The branch campus of George Mason University will cease operation at the end of May, but a working partnership will continue with the American University of Ras Al Khaimah.

Walking through the facilities of the new university and visiting its well-equipped laboratories, Sheikh Saud met the workers who were on their first day of making several major building renovations.

In addition to the existing facilities, a campus center for students and two new residence halls will be built and ready for occupancy by the spring 2010 semester. At a reception with faculty, staff, and students, he invited them to offer suggestions to the architects for the design of the new buildings.

The residences, which will be equipped for wireless internet, are in line with the new concept of providing students living space in studio apartments. Sheikh Saud talked informally with students and staff, encouraging them to look forward to the beginning of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, AURAK will offer academic programs in Biology, Business, and Engineering with plans to add three to four new programs in each of the next several years. AURAK also has a highly regarded English language program, which serves the community as well as students preparing for higher education in English.
